People in the News
We are excited to welcome our newest staff member, Ms. Joni Baker, who joined our west coast office as Development Coordinator this month. Joni comes to us from BMI and has volunteered as several of our LA events, including LA Family Day. Welcome, Joni!
We extend our congratulations to our newest Board member, Marcus Peterzell, Managing Director, Engagement and Entertainment Marketing at Fathom Communications. Marcus, who was elected to the Board last month, has been a tireless and effective supporter of our foundation, having served for more than seven years on the Family Day committee, serving as co-chair for three years, and in 2009 he and his family were co-honorees of Family Day. This year, he chaired the event, raising a record amount of $750,000 for cancer research along with honoring the Jonas Brothers and their management teams. In addition he has helped to organize our LA Family Day for the past two years.
Doctor's Corner
"As a urologist, I am keenly aware of the most common cancer in men, prostate cancer, and as of now, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed in this country during their lifetime. My efforts have been focused on investigating the role of diet and herbs as well as vitamins to prevent cancer of the prostate. In fact I recently completed the first herbal cancer prevention trial at Columbia that holds tremendous promise. If you think of cancer as a flower, in the past, our treatments have eliminated the petals, but left the seeds behind. And our goal is to get rid of the seeds before the petals can grow. We can see the petals on the CT scans and MRIs, but we need to focus on more molecular targets and prevent these seeds from growing and dividing, and do this in a more natural way. We are all here for the same purpose, and that is to eliminate cancer forever. I am grateful to the T.J. Martell Foundation for all of their efforts and for all of you to join in and do your part for finding these cures."
Dr. Katz is
the Carl A. Olsson Professor and Vice Chairman of Urology as well as Director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University and a Principal Investigator funded by our foundation over the past several years. |

The T.J. Martell Foundation was proud to welcome back Belgian Master Chef Daniel Joly from Mirabelle Restaurant in Beaver Creek, Colorado, to the 3rd Annual Gourmet Dinner on June 10th at the Sony Club in Manhattan. Enjoying the sunset from thirty-five stories above midtown, sixty guests from the entertainment, finance and travel industries savored a five-course dinner paired with exquisite wines.
Dr. Aaron Katz, Vice Chairman of Urology and Director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University, gave a brief talk regarding his cutting-edge prostate cancer research funded by the Martell Foundation and his personal experience with cancer in his family. Then auctioneer Robin Treadway and Board President Ron Hartenbaum led a very successful live auction which raised $20,000; the special silent auction featured items from sponsors like Marc Jacobs, ICON Collectibles, Calypso St. Barth's and Van Cleef & Arpels.
Rosanne Cash's twelfth studio album, The List, was released by Manhattan Records in October; she has completed a memoir entitled Composed to be released by Viking in August.

"Our Third Annual Gourmet Dinner was definitely our best one yet. Dr. Katz really reinforced the importance of raising money to research cancer, the disease of our time. Chef Joly created a delicious meal, then we saw a private acoustic performance by the terrific artist Rosanne Cash. It was a lovely evening," says Foundation Board President Ron Hartenbaum.

People in the News
We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of legendary musician Ronnie James Dio, a good friend of the foundation who passed away this weekend after a long battle with stomach cancer.
The T.J. Martell Foundation is honored to be the recipient of the Bob Mercer Memorial Fund, established in loving memory of the music industry veteran who died earlier this month of lung cancer.
Doctor's Corner
Because May was declared National Cancer Research Month in 2007 by the U.S. Congress, we asked Dr. Donald Tindall to comment on the importance of the research we fund.
"My father, James Samuel Tindall, died of prostate cancer. So I know personally its devastating effects. Add his face to more than 27,000 men who are expected to die of prostate cancer this year, and you can begin to imagine the tragic loss from this disease. We at Mayo Clinic are doing everything that we can to fight prostate cancer. Together with support of the T.J. Martell Foundation, our goals are to rapidly translate research findings into clinical applications for the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of prostate cancer. We hope that we can make a real effect in eliminating the impact of this disease on mankind."
Dr. Tindall is
Professor, Director & Vice Chair of Urologic Research at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a Principal Investigator funded by our foundation over the past several years. |

In the News

After our Brownie Points fundraiser with Whole Foods, we received the following letter of thanks from
from Captain Lee A. Kiolbasa, MSC USN, Deputy Commander, Task Force Medical - South - Kandahar, Afghanistan:
"I am writing on behalf of the patients and staff at the Role 32 Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. I would like you to know that your efforts on behalf of our deployed troops, and your delicious brownies, have been much appreciated here in Afghanistan. They have given us a taste of home and most importantly let us know that we are supported on the home front. Once again, thanks for all that you are doing."
Our Brownie Points fundraiser with Whole Foods was a success! During the last week of February, eight of Whole Foods stores in northern New Jersey pledged the net profits for all of the packages of brownies purchased or sent to the troops in Afghanistan. Operation Jersey Cares shipped the brownies to the troops at no cost.
As a result of strong public support, Whole Foods shoppers purchased nearly 700 packages of brownies to take home and sent over 500 packages to the troops. The total donation from Whole Foods Markets to the Foundation was $4,168.50; the T.J. Martell Foundation is very grateful for the contribution to cancer research and is proud to support our troops. Thank you to everyone who supported this promotion. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Whole Foods Markets.

Doctor's Corner
"Did you know that each year, 70,000 men and women between the ages of 15 and 39 are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.? This represents 6% of all new cancer diagnoses, but cancer is the leading cause of death in this age group. Reasons include lack of access to care - this age group has the highest rates of uninsured and underinsured individuals - and delayed diagnosis, often because symptoms are attributed to other causes.
The National Cancer Institute now designates adolescents and young adults with cancer as an 'underserved population,' with significant emphasis on improving awareness, education, clinical care, research and outcome. The Lance Armstrong Foundation supports the Young Adult Alliance with support from the NCI; the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center is a member of this alliance and is conducting research in adolescent and young adult cancers and provides clinical care and access to clinical trials. More information may be found at http://www.vicc.org."

People in the News
Chairman and Founder Tony Martell is pleased to announce new leadership for our national Board of Directors for 2010. The twenty-six directors, including two newly-appointed officers, are each distinguished, accomplished individuals in the fields of music, finance, entertainment, travel, media, and law who have a long history of supporting the Foundation in its mission to raise funds for innovative cancer and AIDS research.
After sixteen years as President of the Board of Directors, legendary music executive Frances Preston has stepped down from this position. Ms. Preston was the Foundation's Humanitarian of the Year honoree in 1992 and helped raise over fifteen million dollars for cancer research through various events and donations. She will continue to be involved with the Foundation as a lifetime Director and an at large member of the Executive Committee.
Tony Martell announced that Ron Hartenbaum was elected President of the Board. Mr. Hartenbaum is a founding partner of MediaAmerica and former CEO of Jones Radio Networks. He launched WYD MediaManagement, LLC in 2004. "This disease is our generation's healthcare battle, so even in tough economic times we need to generate research funding if we are to prevail," Mr. Hartenbaum siad on becoming the Foundation's new President.
Mike Brzostowski,
Continental Airlines Regional Sales Director, was elected Executive Vice President of the Board. Mr. Brzostowski began his career with Continental in 1986 and has held prominent positions in Denver, Los Angeles and Newark, NJ in the customer service arena and now heads a nationally-ranked team of sales professionals. "There is not one person I know who has not been touched in one way or another by a loved one with cancer," he says. "The funds raised by the foundation bring us closer to the day when we can defeat this terrible disease." Thanks in large part to Mr. Brzostowski's dedication, Continental Airlines has raised over $3 million for the T.J. Martell Foundation.
The offices of Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary will remain as in 2009. Paul LiCalsi, a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp, continues his term as Vice Chairman. Kevin Kelleher, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Sony Music Entertainment, continues his term as Treasurer. Andy Tavel, Founder of Tavel and Associates, P.C., continues his term as Secretary. |
